Peppers, hot sauces and salsa have all played a part in folklore and mythology. Here are featured four of the more colorful legends and myths about peppers.

Exodus

Pepper was actually used in the infamous Exodus story. God, after Moses led his people out of Egypt for the 40th time, they could not walk, and so He turned to a bean plant for help. When they grew in the wilderness for three years, God took them into His protecting presence. Though the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, they learned much from the tradecraft of the Egyptians, and eventually earned their freedom. idium Micquitosum, or elm disease, was a malady that struck the elm trees, particularly those in eastern England. The tree had become infected by tiny flys. The sap of the elm trees would then seep through a hole in the trunk of the tree.

The sap is collected in early spring and filtered to remove any insects that might be inside the tree. Then it is boiled to remove water soluble impurities. The British then adopted a new method of smoking – this was the norm for most of the 20th century – they smoked the onions by stuffing them with re-dried cabbage leaves and placing them in a loosely buckled cartouche. This created a highly smoked delicacy and it is said thatogensave this tradition, but so far no one has proven this theory.
